Meen kulambu is my all time favourite. The reason why I like fish is its very rich in protein , no cholesterol and won't feel heavy. I am trying out different varieties of fish dishes to not get bored of my favorite one.
Ingredients :
1. viral meen / Butter fish ---- 1/2 kg
2. small onions ---- 20 nos
3. garlic ---- 10 pods
4. Tomato ---- 1 no
5. Tamarind ---- big lemon size
6. Red chilli powder ---- 3 teaspoons
7. coriander powder ---- 1 1/2 teaspoons
8. turmeric powder ---- 1/4 teaspoon
9. salt to taste
10. oil ---- 2 tablespoons
11. mustard ---- few
12. fenugreek seed ---- 1 teaspoon
13. Jeera ---- 1 teaspoon
14. Asofotida ---- 1/2 teaspoon
15. curry leaves few
Preparation Method
1. Clean & wash the fish pieces.
2. Soak tamarind in water and prepare tamarind juice.
3. Grind raw onions and tomatoes to smooth paste.
4. Heat oil in a pan , add the mustard , jeera , asofotida , fenugreek seeds , curry leaves and when the mustard starts to splutter then add 2 chopped onions and 10 pods of chopped garlic and fry till the onion fries well.
5. Then add tamarind water , onion grinded paste , salt to taste , turmeric powder , coriander powder , red chilli powder and add 2 to 3 cups of water to it and allow this to boil.
6. When it is fully cooked and almost near the consistency you desire then add the washed fish pieces and cook for a few more minutes. The fish pieces cook really quick so add them near the very end.
7. Then remove from fire. Serve this with hot rice or with dosa , Iddly and Iddiyappam & Appam.
