Kedara gauri vrata or kedareshwara gowri vratham is an observance to perform on deepavali amavasya. Usually on the day of kedara vratam married women or married couple worship kedareshwara, lord shiva. kedareshwara is another name of lord shiva.
In some places, kedara gauri vratham is observed from ashwayuja bahula ashtami ( 8 th day in the second phase of ashwayuja masam ). But in practice kedara gauri vratham is performed for on a single day i.e . deepavali amavasya day.
Devotees perform kedareshwara gowri vratham to get rid their sorrows and sins and to lead the life with happiness and pleasure. Performing kedara gauri vrath gives almost all joys for devotees.
Kammavar naidu caste people do the kedara gauri nombu in a different way by fasting the whole day. It must be noted that vratam should not be misunder stood as mere fasting. By observing a vratam a person is trying to purify his mind through meditation , worship and by sticking to some ' vow ' that he / she has taken. Now this vow can include fasting, not telling lie , not getting anger etc. A vratam should be seen as a deliberate attempt on your part to bring back discipline into your life. fasting should be voluntary and it should not be unwillingly.
They make 21 adhirasams . Along with adhirasams they have nombu kaiyir , 21 bananas , 21 turmeric , 21 betel leaf and 21 nuts , 2 coconut , flowers , sandelwood powder, turmeric powder , kumkum , kathola karugamani , a small piece of jaggery , and pooja materials. They keep all this in a plate and they close the plate with a towel and they take this plate to the temple. In the temple the pujar says a story of a lady who last her nombu kaiyir and her wealth was reducing day by day. Then she was advised to take this kedara gowri nombu strictly following the rites and thus got her wealth back with all her family members progressing in life.
