Thuthuvalai is a creeper used in herbal medicine. This grows very well in damp areas. This creeper & leaves have small thorns. It bears a flowers purple in co lour and a fruit red in colour . In many homes they grow this in their kitchen gardens. This leaves can be cook in different forms. This leaves reduces cough & phlegm in addition to improving digestive functions. This leaves are much used in herbal medicine for chest disease & digestive disorders.
Ingredients :
1. Thuthuvalai leaves ---- 20 nos
2. Tamarind ---- marble size
3. Red chillies ---- 2 nos
4. jeera ---- 1 teaspoon
5. Black pepper ---- 1 teaspoon
6. Horse gram / kollu parupu ---- 1 tablespoon
7. garlic ---- 2 nos
8. mustard & fenugreek seed ---- few
9. Asofotida ---- 1/4 teaspoon
10. oil ---- 1/4 teaspoon
11. curry leaves few, salt to taste
Preparation method
1. Soak tamarind in water & extract juice from it and keep it aside.
2. Take 1 red chilli , jeera , black pepper , horse gram , thuthuvalai leaves and grind to a coarse paste.
3. Now heat a kadai add 1/4 teaspoon of oil , then add mustard , fenugreek , red chillies , crushed garlic , Asofotida, curry leaves , when it starts spluttering then add grinded paste and 2 cups of water , salt to taste , and bring to boil and remove from fire.
Serve this with hot white Rice or even it was enjoyed as a soup in cold winters.
