Because of light , fire works and sweets its a great favorite for children. Now-a -days electric lights and candles have been a good replacement for traditional lamps. Diwali has always been associated with the worshipping of lakshmi. Lakshmi-puja on diwali is performed to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. In villages cattle are adorned and worshipped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In our south India cows offered special veneration, they are adorned and worshipped on this day.
The victory of Rama
According to diwali legends in Ayodhya the people welcomed them by lighting rows of clay lamps. Twinkling oil lamps were there in every home and fire work were there too. Great celebrations were held and every one was happy for Rama to be the king of Ayodhya. This celebration took place on the night of the new moon of Ashwin ( october- november ). The tradition and the timing continued to be followed even these days. Even today diwali celebration means- happiness, fire works and sweets. Thus the festival of diwali is an honour of Rama's victory over Ravana. Among all the legends of diwali this one is the most believed one.

south Indian diwali celebration begins early in the morning. The eldest family member applies sesame oil on the heads of all the family members. Then it,s off for a bath, beginning with the youngest in the family. They emerge with new clothes and burst crackers. During Thalai deepavali the newly weds go to the brides parental home and take blessings from the elders.
The diwali breakfast consists of sweets , idli , dosa , vada ect... The diwali celebrations include a vist to the temple , gifts of clothes and jewellery ,gorging on sweets and receiving blessings of elders.
A puja is performed for the family deities in the morning. After naivedhya of the items they have Breakfast. south Indians also believe that departed souls return on the day of diwali. As a sign of respect to the dead family members their favorite foods are prepared and placed in a banana leaf in front of their photographs.
Playing cards is one of the oldest traditions of diwali. According to the legends, goddess parvathi was playing dice with her spouse lord shiva on this day. She enjoyed herself so much that she said that whoever would gamble on diwali night, would remain prosperous throughout the year, now-s days dice has become outdated, it has been replaced by cards. However many people put a limt to the stakes that can be played. In the evening lamps are lighted and crackers are burst. Almost all the cracker manufacturing units are in Tamil Nadu, there is no dearth of fire works here.
